Gary Numan Tubeway Army was the band Gary Numan formed in 1977 with Paul Gardiner and Jess Lidyard. This early project laid the foundation for his future influence on electronic music.
The self-titled debut album arrived at the end of 1978. It marked a clear shift from punk into a more experimental electronic sound.
Critics often describe the Gary Numan Tubeway Army album as “garagey sci-fi rock.” It blends raw guitar energy with early synthesizer use.
During the recording sessions, Numan discovered a Minimoog synthesizer in the studio. That moment changed his approach to music. He began experimenting with electronic sounds and rhythms.
After releasing the Gary Numan Tubeway Army album, the band quickly recorded Replicas. This follow-up included “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?”, which reached number one in 1979.
Numan then moved forward as a solo artist. The Tubeway Army members continued as his backing band.
Today, Gary Numan Tubeway Army remains an important part of music history. The debut album helped shape early synth-pop and electronic music.
